KSWB in San Diego published an article August 17 titled “Deaf woman robbed on street”:
Here is how the (undoubtedly hearing) reporter described the scene:
“The woman was unable to talk because of her disability, so the first police officers to arrive had difficulty communicating with her and were forced to question her by writing.”
Isn’t it interesting how people bring their own perspective to a situation?
Here is how that same situation would be seen by a deaf person:
“The police were unable to sign because of their ignorance, so the deaf woman had difficulty communicating with them and was forced to answer them by writing.”
Stop putting the onus on the deaf people! We can’t learn to hear; you can learn to sign.
